July 11, 2010

July 1 was an exciting day for Camp Courant as the Hartford Courant and FOX CT held the 1st Annual Camp Courant Telethon live on the air from 7 to 8 p.m. For the first time in Camp Courant’s history, the organization has had to put children on the waiting list due to a decrease in funding. The telethon, which was also sponsored by St. Germain Investments, was hosted by FOX CT Reporters Jim Altman and Laurie Perez and raised close to $73,000 for the camp’s operations. Pictured here after the telethon are: WDRC-AM’s Brad Davis’ FOX CT Reporters Jim Altman and Laurie Perez; Camp Courant Executive Director Beth Gibbs; and St. Germain Investments President Michael Matty.

A local “Ready, Set, Cook!” showdown is happening today to benefit Avon’s Gifts of Love program, which helps meet the basic needs of individuals and families experiencing a temporary financial crisis so they can be self sufficient. The Fox CT’s Traffic Reporter Rachel Lutzker is a host and the Courant’s JAVA Columnist, MaryEllen Fillo, will help judge the event at Tunxis Country Club. The competition includes chefs Kevin Cottle and Van Hurd of the Country Club of Farmington, Tyler Anderson of The Copper Beech Inn and William Carbone of Dish Bar & Grill.

“Out with the old, in with the new – including a long overdue plan to put something on that property that welcomes people to Hartford, not tells them to keep driving.” -- From Courant Columnist Helen Ubinas’ July 8 column titled, “Razing A Building, Symbols And All.”
